John Rook retired as a Mississippi Riverboat captain.
While working on a Mississippi riverboat he brought logs from Wisconsin down to Le Claire Iowa during the 1880s.
When he was old enough, John left for California. He got as far as Texas and decided that he liked Iowa better.
He came back and got a job as a stagecoach driver.
When the riverboats provided faster service than the stagecoaches traveling along the upper Mississippi River, he switched jobs.
He started working on riverboats and retired as a riverboat captain.
Even back then, jobs did not last forever. You always had to be willing to switch careers.
If you visit the Buffalo Bill Museum in Le Clair, Iowa, you can read his story and the stories of many others who worked on the upper Mississippi River.
He was born September 13, 1848 in Scott County, IA, where he passed away in April of 1947.
I was born in 1946 and became his great-great-grandson.
I wondered if he drank green during those quiet times as he was rolling down the river, pretending to pilot the river boat Queen.
In the Summer of 2024 we rolled upstream on the Riverboat Twilight to Davenport and rolled back down again to Le Claire.

There is a restaurant called "The Crane & Pelican Cafe" in Le Claire, IA, which opened in 2009 at the Dawley House, built in 1851.
It sits on a hill, overlooking the Mississippi River.
The restaurant started life as a mansion built for a riverboat captain.
We went there for Supper, and I ordered the meatloaf dinner.
As I looked out the window next to our table, I wondered, "Did John ever meet Mr. Dawley?"
My imagination took me back to their time, watching them sitting by the window, telling the grandest of stories
I wondered what snacks they would be sharing while telling stories.

Do you have stories that were handed down from generation to generation?
Are they stories that can be written in an email?Stories that cover the Legacy of Life for an ancestor within your family tree. 🎂
Stories are like a cake with one part fact and three parts imagination, including a spoonful of powdered sugar sprinkled on top.📚
This story shows how you can add simple Emojis to create a visual element.
Used sparingly, they are helpful, too many and they may cause visual clutter.
